POPEYE the sailor man

At first I thought "POPEYES" was named after the cartoon character of Popeye the sailor man, which I was quite puzzled as I didn't know Popeye loved fried chicken. I thought Popeye loved only spinach!

Well, this Popeyes Chicken & Seafood Restaurant was actually named after the character of Popeye Doyle in the movie "The French Connection". The first outlet was opened in 1972 in Louisiana and since then they have been operating more than 2500 outlets throughout the world.

The first outlet opened not long ago in Malaysia (IIRC) was in TTDI and now the second one a couple of months back in Mid Valley.

Recently I had a chance to check them out at this Mid Valley's outlet for my lunch. They are located at lower level and opposite McDonald's. The place was rather "cram" during lunch hour.

I ordered a 2 piece spicy chicken set...

It was very crispy and the spicy one was not so spicy after all... but it was just right. Not oily as well. I prefer their spicy chicken over KFC spicy chicken. For the original one, KFC will still be my choice albeit a bit oily. The meat was tender and juicy. The size of their chicken was bigger compared to KFC's one.

The coleslaw tasted OK only. The mash potato, I'd say better than the KFC's one where the gravy didn't taste like pepper after all.

The 2-piece chicken set inclusive of coleslaw, mash potato, a piece of "biscuit"(the biscuit was soft but tasted OK. It was more liked a scone to me than biscuit), and soft drink is only RM9.90 nett. (no tax)

Fried chicken without this is just not right!

KFC & Yao Yao Ping

KFC here stands for Klang Fried Chicken. The chicken is tastier and crunchier compared to Kentucky Fried Chicken.

The other type of chicken they serve - " Ayam Percik', which is a Malay's delicacy. Normally only Malay know best in this recipe but surprisingly the owner of this stall, who is Chinese serves better 'Ayam Percik' than many of our Malay friends. The chicken is well marinated and barbecued to perfection.

You must dip the chicken with their special chili sauce to make it irresistible! I think they must have put some 'santan' ( coconut milk) in the sauce which is so tasty!

The chicken is being kept in the oven to preserve the temperature after barbecued or fried, so that it is crunchy and hot when served.

The only drinks they serve is their signature 'Yao Yao Ping' (ice blended drinks). I ordered the red bean flavor to quench my thirst.

There are few different flavour of 'Yao Yao Ping', lychee, sour plum, pineapple, honeydew, red bean, coffee & etc...

There is another stall in this shop which is selling Wan Tan Mee... but most of the people come here for the chicken.
It is well indicated the time you should go after their chicken and the price of the chicken.

The shop is located in Jalan Young, Pandamaran Klang. Don't bother to look for this road sign. It would be a hassle to read the road name. If you're using Federal Highway, just go all the way straight heading to North Port. You will see a huge Chinese School, Hin Hua on your left and 1 km after the school you will reach a traffic light junction where you can see the sign 'Pandamaran'. Just follow the sign to turn left. Go straight until the 2nd traffic light junction which you can see a Perodua show room then turn right and the shop would be just opposite the SRJK(C) Pandamaran. Location map.

Breakfast @ KFC

Since I was tired of having Gardenia with butter and jam for breakfast at home, and not feeling like having Wan Tan Mee or Curry Mee as well. Roti Canai was the other choice that crossed my mind but I dropped the idea as I didn’t want my body to smell like beef curry afterwords.
Suddenly I remembered I read somewhere that KFC is having breakfast promotion. And I thought it would be a good idea to try them out since their burger and a cup of coffee is only RM3.90. (cheaper than McDonald’s by RM0.10) So I stopped for my breakfast at the KFC outlet which was attached to a Petronas petrol station halfway between Subang & Damansara of the NKVE before heading back to Penang for Cheng Meng.
I walked up to the counter and go through their whole menu but couldn’t find the RM3.90 one. I asked, ” can I have the set breakfast for RM3.90 one?” and I got a reply, ” sir, do you have the coupon? Without coupon the set would be RM5.50″.
“F**K!….. Where the f**k to get your coupon?”. Well, of course I didn’t say it out. What to do? I am not like some aunties who are happy to carry a whole stack of Tesco or Carrefour coupons with them all the time. My advice to you- KFC, if you really want to compete with McDonald’s, you should do away with this kind of f**king coupons. Well, that moment it would be ‘pai sei’ to walk away, so I somehow reluctantly paid RM5.80 (after tax) for the burger and coffee.
Even though this incident slightly affected my impression towards them, but the burger actually tasted better than the McBreakfast’s burger. It is what its wrapper stated- Hot, Juicy, Crunchy, Fresh & Tasty!
